2010 Reading From my Shelves Challenge by Bibliophile

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

I decided to join Bibliophile by the Sea's 2010 Reading From my Shelves Challenge. I think I'll try for 20 books. Below are the rules:
So with 2010 just around the corner, I've decided to try to lessen the weight on my bookshelves, by reading books from my shelves, and then passing the books on to someone else: a friend, relative, the library, used book store, swap them, just as long as the book leaves my house once it has been read. .

Does this sound like something you'd like to do as well??? If so, feel free to join in:
  •  grab the button
  •  decide how many books you want to read from your shelves (minimum of 20 - no maximum)
  •  find a new home for the books once you read them
  •  post the titles and the authors of books you've read and passed on
  •  project runs from January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010
  •  crossover challenge books are allowed

& Myspace Graphics
Happy Thanksgiving to you all! Tomorrow I plan to watch some of the parade on television and eat dinner around four pm. I plan to eat ham, roasted potatoes and pears, then pecan pie for dessert. I'm thankful for so much this year: my health, my family and good friends.

Guest Blogger Rosefire: One Pair of Feet by Monica Dickens

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

When did I read it? November 17, 2009 to November 24, 2009
Where did I get it? Paperback Swap
Genre: nonfiction
Year Published: 1942
Where Will it go? To my sister in Australia
I just finished One Pair of Feet by Monica Dickens. It's semi autobiographical of Ms. Dickens' time as a nurse in England during World War II. I loved this book and give it four and a half hearts. I thought it was a little dated now, but still very good.
Heart Beat Heart Beat Heart Beat Heart Beat Broken Heart - Be Still my Heart! (Rating 4.5)

A to Z Challenge '10 hosted by Becky

I decided to join Becky's challenge for 2010.
I am going to be joining the A to Z Challenge again next year. It is being hosted by Becky again and here is the sign-up post.

I think I'll be able to complete the challenge next year because she is being very lenient on the hard to find letters. Here is what she says:
How strict is the 26 or 52? I know it isn't always easy to find those difficult letters. The thought of finding the X's (for example) might scare folks away. It shouldn't! I'm a merciful host! (Ask anyone!)

If you want to give the X's a go... For authors, try to find an X in the first name, middle name, or last name. For titles, it doesn't have to be the starting word. Try to find an X somewhere in a title, and it'd count in my book.
So don't let those letters scare you away - it is doable!!

There are 3 levels to choose from:

Authors -- Read alphabetically by author. Commit to 26 books.
Titles -- Read alphabetically by title. Commit to 26 books.
Authors & Titles -- Commit to reading 52 books

I think I'll do Authors and Titles. I've read about 11 books so far in this year's challenge. I'm hoping to finish up soon.

Musing Mondays

Monday, November 23, 2009

Musing Mondays is a meme hosted by Just One More Page. The question is:
What books did you read while in school? Were there any that you particular liked, or even hated? Did any become lifelong favourites?

Let's see, I loved most of the books that I read in school. There was Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, Dragonsong by Anne McCaffery, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Night by Elie Wiesel, and The Diary of Anne Frank.

Some of the books I didn't like as much: Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Mill on the Floss by George Elliot and To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. I once was asked why I didn't like Animal Farm.  To be perfectly honest, it was the first book that I read by George Orwell, to me it was too slow and involved.

My favorite book read in school was Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. It was full of suspense and mystery. The first book that I read on my own was The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy.

I once read a list of the ten most boring books in a book of lists that I got in the library. I had read seven of the ten books in school.
